Why do members work?
It puts the "community" in community supported agriculture. All Rochester members are asked to work 1 shift at Distribution during the main season. All CSA members who are physically able are encouraged (but NOT required) to participate in a "work party" at Peacework Farm. This gives us an opportunity to work with our farmers and other CSA members and to see how our food is grown. Members and their families get to see that food comes from farms, not store shelves. We get to know other members by working alongside each other. Farm work parties will be scheduled throughout the growing season (ususally on a Sunday afternoon). Depending on the time of the season, tasks could include potato planting, pea and bean picking, garlic planting and lots of weeding. Each session will end with a potluck supper at the farm with farm-fresh seasonal veggies. Work party dates will be announced in the weekly Farm Updates emailed to members and posted on the website and Facebook page.
Working at Distribution (Rochester members only)
All Rochester members, both full and partial shares, participate in 1 Distribution work shift over the course of the main season. Please arrive at the Abundance warehouse promptly at 5:30 pm: 1/2 hour prior to the beginning of Distribution.
This is a great time to connect with fellow CSA members, share cooking techniques and favorite kid-friendly recipes all while helping to facilitate this key component of our CSA.
Shifts can involve any of the following (as instructed by the distribution captain):
- Set up tables and hanging scales for share pickup
- Set out & label veggie boxes
- Weigh vegetables into individual bags ahead of pickup
- Check in members, remind members who have extra orders to pick up or payments due
- Orient new members to the pickup and extra ordering processes
- Refill boxes during pickup & explain veggie choices
- End-of-shift cleanup
